How AI app builders actually work: prompts, agents and real code
Step 1: Planning before code
Good builders don't start typing immediately. A planning pass turns 'a booking app for my salon' into a structure: pages, data model, what connects to what. Clayde's Planner tier does this explicitly — you see the plan and approve it before generation starts. It's the difference between a builder that guesses and one that asks.
Step 2: Generation, in real frameworks
The agents then write ordinary code — React components, API routes, database schemas — the same files a human developer would create. This matters more than it sounds: because the output is real code, it works with every library, can be edited by hand or by AI, and leaves with you if you go.
Step 3: Running and self-repair
The generated code is compiled and started on a real machine. When something fails — a typo, a missing import, a wrong type — the agent reads the error output, diagnoses the cause, patches the file and rebuilds. This loop, build-fail-fix-pass, is what separates tools that finish from tools that hand you a red error and give up.
Step 4: Versioning every turn
Each AI turn lands as its own saved version with a diff you can read. Rewind deletes a bad direction in one click instead of an hour of undo. It also makes AI and human edits compatible: both are just changes to the same history.
Step 5: Ship it
Publishing puts the app on hosted infrastructure with a URL, SSL and the option of your own domain. The boring parts — provisioning a database, wiring sign-in, generating a sitemap — were part of the build, not a weekend of setup after it.
What AI builders are not
They aren't telepathy: the more specific your prompt (and your feedback on each turn), the better the result. They aren't a replacement for judgment: you still decide what to build and whether it's any good. And at launch quality varies by task — which is exactly why routing each step to the right model matters.
